Anglin Cemeteries in Yancey County

RB ANGLIN CEMETERY

Entering into the RB Anglin cemetery

When I was a kid, my grandfather spoke about the family cemeteries in Yancey County, NC where many of our relatives were buried. Growing up in NJ, I have never visited one of these sites - when I went with my grandparents to visit NC, they were older and not able to climb the hill. The cemetery my grandfather spoke about most often was the RB Anglin Cemetery. It is where his mother, Laura Anglin Metcalf, is buried. It is also where is father, John Anglin, was buried. My grandfather spoke little of his father and if you read some of my other posts, you will understand why.

In the isolated hills of North Carolina, burials were done far differently than in more populated areas. The very land of the family cemetery is sacred. For many, the thought of being buried anywhere other than alongside their parents, grandparents and ancient generations would be unacceptable. While much of the rest of the country buried their forefathers in a public cemetery – surrounded by hundreds or even thousands of strangers – our family returned their ancestors to parcels of land that had been in the family’s name for countless decades or even centuries.

The RB Anglin Cemetery lies 3 Miles west of Burnsville, NC on Bitterroot Dr. The file below is from the North Carolina USGenWeb Archives, as noted at the end of this post. My notations are in blue as they relate to my place in the family's lineage. The pictures are from my grandparents' personal collection of photographs.

~Lil’s father was Andrew Banks – per a bastardy bond I found in my research.
~Laura’s father was James, Betsy’s first cousin and my 2nd great grandfather.  He was Raburn’s brother’s William’s son. (William was a causality of the Battle of Chickamunga, GA in the Civil War)   William is also my 3rd great grandfather.
~James was also said to be the father of Dan & the 2-3 children born with birth defects – I find mixed details about the children – I think 2 sons and 1 daughter – 1 son was Fredrick and another John I.  The daughter was Sallie, but the notation below lists two sons, but no daughter…. perhaps the daughter is among the unidentified graves.
